Not on your face. Face Gua Sha is much softer and gentler than the type that can leave you red. Although, if you would like us to apply a stronger Gua Sha to your neck for pain relief and extra results, just let us know you're ok with that.

We find that face Gua Sha actually helps already surfaced pimples heal faster. If you have dormant congestion already under the surface layer of skin it is possible to get a few detox pimples the next morning. Detox pimples are usually small whiteheads that come and go quickly, often clearing out with face cleansing. We consider this a positive response, and do not expect it to continue beyond that.

Spa Gua Sha is not necessarily rooted in traditional Chinese medicine principles and techniques, and feels quite different to what we provide, according to many of our clients. In spas, face Gua Sha tends to be practiced as a lymphatic drainage technique which is far lighter and more superficial in reach. TCM-based Gua Sha draws on specific principles that we are trained in as Acupuncturists.

This depends on the skin disorder, the length of time you’ve had it, and how severe it is. We ask all patients to have the ability to undergo 4-6 months of treatment, during which time most experience clear changes in their condition. Some complete treatment within that time, and others may require another 4-6 months for skin to clear and remain stable.

The TCM approach is to clear the inflammation at your skin, and also what’s wrong “under the hood” internally. Surface inflammation almost always starts with internal dysfunction. Our job is to diagnose the deeper dysfunction and correct its roots. This takes time as we work to correct deeper conditions while working with the natural cycles of your skin turnover.

After we design your custom herbal formula, our partner herbal pharmacy will cook your herbs into a traditional decoction. This is like a “soup” of medicinal herbs that you will drink twice a day. This is the strongest form of herbs (compared to pills, capsules, and tinctures) and is better for getting results for chronic inflammatory skin disorders. WARNING - these decoctions do taste strong and often unpleasant. If you are the type that really struggles with things that don’t taste good, this may not be a fit for you.

In your first visit there isn’t enough time to give you Acupuncture treatment, as we will spend almost the whole hour talking about your health and skin history. In follow up sessions, there is usually time for Acupuncture if it makes sense given your skin condition. We will create the treatment plan for you.

No, the cost here covers consultation and exam fees. Herbs are additional and at present average $300-$400 per month, depending on your skin condition. Herb costs vary by type and dosage and are calculated when prescribed and ordered. If you have a budget cap, please let us know. Topical skincare costs vary widely and can be tailored to your budget.

We need to see you once per month either in person or for tele-health. As your skin changes, we need to check in with you to fully comprehend your progress. This helps us determine how your treatment needs to change as you get better. Customized TCM treatment is very dynamic.

No, this is more of a “dry” Head Spa - where we give you all the pieces of a typical Head Spa service but without the final shampoo and blow out. The other main difference is your provider is a massage therapist with expertise and licensure in massage (as opposed to a hair stylist in most head spa salons).

We will be using treatment oils and products that support your scalp health. They work really well with massage and Gua Sha together. But, if you prefer, you can opt out of scalp oils, just let us know!

In TCM, an important part of treating conditions like alopecia is to improve the blood flow to the scalp. We recommend a multiple prong approach - physical stimulation (offered in this treatment), proper nutrition, and good sleep hygiene. When combined with a strategic plan that hits all the right notes for hair growth, regular treatment can be helpful.

This treatment is suitable for mild to moderate cases. We can use TCM topical treatments that are helpful to the condition in your session.
